Plus Size Gyms
One of my friends posted on her blog ( http://yourlifefitness-marti.blogspot.com/2012/07/plus-size-only-gym-yeah-or-neah.html?spref=fb ), “The qualification to be a member of a plus size gym is that you must have 50 pounds or more to lose.”
So, I thought that I’d weigh in, too.
Should there be gyms exclusively for obese or overweight members? My friend’s primary concern, it seems, is a matter of being self-conscious in the presence of more fit members. (I know what that’s like; I’m self-conscious about a lot of things because I have Avoidant Personality Disorder, but that’s a different story).
One way to look at this issue is economics. While certainly some overweight people would like to belong to a “50 extra pounds” gym, is there enough demand to make such an operation economically feasible?
I haven’t read much about such gyms, so I’m kind of giving a cold reading here, but what happens when the obese members get into shape and have gotten down to a healthy (or healthier) weight? Does that person have to find a new gym?
